In the Spring of 2015 The Ross Ferry Stewardship Society and community members collaborated to create a Farmers' Market.
Despite the short notice (planning began in April 2015) the Market came together and soon became an integral part of our Summer Sundays.
The aim of the market is twofold: to encourage the use and production of local food; and, to foster a spirit of community by providing an opportunity to bring people together for social interaction and community building.
On Sundays from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm during the summer and early fall months you can find us at the Ross Ferry Fire Hall, 9651 Kempt Head Road (just stone’s throw from the Ross Ferry Marine Park).
Become a Vendor Anyone wishing to be a vendor must read the Vendor Rules and Regulations and be in compliance with them, then complete the vendor application form and send it to Joella Foulds at email@example.com or mailed to 6025 Kempt Head Rd., Southside Boularderie, NS, B1Y 2N8. Call 902-674-2578 for more information or to arrange to have the application delivered to you in person.
Preference will be given to vendors who can commit to coming every week. The cost of a table will be $10 per week.
The face behind Bee Free Soap, Ashley Marsh, has been making homemade soap for 3 years now. She started her small soap business two years ago and makes her soaps (of various delightful scents and colours) using fresh, simple, and natural ingredients. Ashley was born and raised in Cape Breton and lived in Alberta for 7 years; which is where her passion for soap making began. Other than soap making, nature, hiking and adventuring around the island with her family are some of Ashley's favourite things to do. We are happy to have Ashley back in Cape Breton and as one of our many wonderful vendors.
Silver Birch Acres is a small hobby farm located in Boularderie Centre and one of our amazing vendors. Joey and Duncan grow with a great passion for working the land organically to produce vegetables such as potatoes, kale, lettuce, rhubarb, and carrots. Emmaly takes great pride in her pro cut sunflowers, offering beautiful bouquets. Out of their kitchen comes jams, salsa, zucchini relish, baked-goods, and homemade dishcloths. Eggs are also new to their table which are produced by their free-range laying hens.
Joella Foulds has been growing vegetables, flowers, and making preserves since she was a very young child growing up on a farm on the prairies. Moving to Boularderie more than 40 years ago was a wonderful opportunity to return to those roots. The idea of a Farmer's Market was never far from her mind, and thanks to great community spirit and some dedicated volunteers, Ross Ferry Farmer's Market was born. 'Joella's Garden' really says what you might expect to find at her market table... a variety of garden veggies, & flowers in season. As well as jams, jellies, & pickles made from local berries and home grown vegetables.
Danish born Cape Breton chef Lars Willum has worked at some of the finest country inns and restaurants on Cape Breton Island. Find chef Lars each Sunday behind the counter of "Cafe Lars" in the tea room, ready to serve one of his many delicious dishes.
Jim Dolomont is retired from a 45 year welding career and is now enjoying his time with the vendors and public at the Farmer's Market. Jim creates a large variety of welded iron and wood items, made from recycled materials. Many of his pieces are one of a kind and garden related. Jim enjoys creating new and interesting pieces and is sure to have something to brighten up your garden space.
Rod and Charlotte Macintyre are retired from the dairy industry, but still have a passion for farming. They enjoy working their wild blueberry fields and vegetable gardens on Southside Boularderie.
